Google it. At one point in my storied life, I was an In-Seat-Server (glorified beer vendor) at Sox Park, a.k.a. US Cellular Field. I’ve been to the World Series. Steve Martin once shared an elevator with me. I have won 10 Texas Hold’em Tournaments in as many years. I once hit someone into next week. (It was late on a Saturday night, and as my fist connected with his jaw, the Coo-coo clock struck Midnight and poof, it was Sunday.) I won the 2011 Chicken Nugget Invitational. I put seven nuggets down in 60 seconds. Then did it again. I am trying to befriend Mike Tyson via Twitter. I am a HUGE Wilco fan. My elementary school has a set of rules which are named after me. They are called, “THE Joe Moran Rules”. I am a White Sox fan. I like tomato sauce but hate tomatoes. I have returned to the island. The TV show, “Dexter”, is shot in my neighborhood. We are not in Miami.
I like my steak in the pan with butter. Garlic is essential. People have requested my autograph. I have complied. George Harrison is my favorite Beatle. Blue Label is good but I prefer Gold. I believe I could hit one over the fence if given the opportunity to take batting practice at White Sox Park. When I was in the Sixth grade my teacher caught me French kissing my special lady friend. After a long winded lecture, this woman of Education, my teacher, called the special lady friend a tramp. After which she looked me up and down like the tall glass of water that I am, smiled, and called me a stud.

So, ah, this video is kinda cool. I like it so much I’m gonna share it with you. I like Matt McConaughey. I think he’s a cool dude. I am not gonna hate on him because all the ladies want him more than they want me. There’s enough women for the both of us. No need to fight, ya see. It is not my style. I heard and saw this video for the first time back in January, and decided to make it my anthem for 2012.

So far it’s been a horrible year. Just kidding. It’s been awesomely fun and exciting. I’m thinking of writing a blog about it some day.

I read this piece upon returning to Casa de Moran. It had been a long day at the office. The phones had been ringing non stop. The office sounded like a casino floor, and miracles were being requested for Elvis to rise from the grave and perform a set at the International Hotel in Las Vegas. I’m also dealing with back spasms. Fun times. When I came back from lunch I began to finish up the day’s work. At some point I started crossing items off tomorrow’s list of to-do’s. That’s right. I am proactive. The biggest disappointment came however, at three post meridian time. I was informed that this day, has been Tuesday all along. I was looking forward to tomorrow being Thursday. What can you do? (sigh) Read what is below, that’s what. This is good shit. It’s what the hokey-pokey is all about.

mightyflynn:

Elissa Goldstone, Untitled (Baseball Drawing – Fly Ball), Paper and cotton thread, 11×16 inches, 2010.

Elissa Goldstone: Have you ever read any classic sports writing? The best is always about baseball (Roger Angell, Philip Roth, or John Updike). This is because baseball, more than any other sport, is nostalgia in motion. Even as it’s occurring in real-time, you’re already imagining the moment as a memory, and are contextualizing it as epic.

To be sure, most sports have this quality of memorializing, but baseball is designed to be viewed in the past-tense. It’s a long-term relationship, where the present moment or play is completely insignificant without the entire history of the game along side of it. And every play, be it awful or awe-inspiring, has a place in the books. So we buy treasures and proudly don jerseys and hats, and we keep signed bats and balls, all to keep us reliving the moment and, with it, a nostalgia for the game itself.

A baseball season is 162 games (not counting spring training and the post-season) and no matter how good your team is this year, or last year, or even for the past decade, you know, with absolute certainty, that winning cannot last. Heartbreak is inevitable. You cannot win every game. You can’t even come close. No team has ever won even seventy-five percent of their regular season games, and those that have come close are memorialized in the books and in the minds and paraphernalia of fans. It won’t last, but we remember—so it does.

I know this all sounds fatalistic, but it actually establishes a way to enjoy the minutia of the game. I spend time focusing on the details. The details are beautiful, and there so many. In my artwork, I try to focus on particulars that have a strong visual identity that stretch beyond baseball into American culture. Major League baseball has been played for 125-plus years; this game is ingrained. For example, everyone knows what a baseball looks like… . it’s classic and appealing: white leather with red stitching, symmetrical, and well-crafted . Of course, it exists to be thrown, or caught, or hit. But the ball recalls more than its usefulness. It’s an association to the game through a person, place, or time, and becomes a visual connector to memory.

I have tickets to the Jan. 21st show at the Paladium, WHICH, here it comes: also serves as the Palace Hotel Ballroom in the Blues Brothers movie. Don’t believe me? Google it.

“Orange Whip? Orange Whip? 3 Orange Whips.”

So last night I was watching the NPR series, Tiny Desk Concerts with Wilco. I remember seeing this a couple of months ago, but my friend, @beardedjew, posted a link to it last night so I watched it again, and again, and again. This band is awesome. Watch the Tiny Desk Concert here. These days when I think of Wilco, I think of Chicago. They represent the city well.

I particularly enjoy the song, The Whole Love. Listening to the acoustic version makes me appreciate the song that much more. I love the slide guitar. The new album is the most rounded one they’ve put out in years. It’s a happy album. It’s the whole love, baby.

Today we #celebrate the life of Tooth #19, a.k.a. 1st Molar...

Today we #celebrate the life of Tooth #19, a.k.a. 1st Molar (6-year molar), who succumbed to his battles with tooth decay and receding gums after a freak accident that happened on Tuesday night. Tooth #19 was pulled Wednesday night at 7:03 PM. He was 34 years old.

On Tuesday night, a gum drop was inserted into the region that is known as Moran’s Mouth. In what has become an all too common practice in the region, protocol was ignored, and the conveyor belt accepted the gum drop and proceeded to roll it back to Tooth #19 before it could be softened up for chewing. Once the gum drop was in place it was too late. When the jaws compressed, the pressure was too much for #19’s crown and it cracked. After 24 hrs, 4 dentists, 2 dental assistants, and 1 accounts receivable clerk, Tooth’s #18 and #20 knew what was up and informed the other teeth.

#19, as he was affectionately known among his friends and family, is survived by 32 other naturally grown teeth in Moran’s Mouth. Born and raised on the south side of town, known as Cavity Junction, #19 will be remembered for having a strong and reliable chomper, breaking down some of the biggest and toughest pieces of food in a career that saw several injuries from minor cavity fillings, gingivitis, and 2 major root canals.

Although the region is stable, a No Chew Zone is in place at Cavity Junction indefinitely. All chewing will take place in the eastern region of Moran’s Mouth, known as Crown Village.

In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Joseph R. Moran Foundation. All donations go directly to Joseph R. Moran.

Mustachio Day!

With my $25.00 donation to #Movember, I am proud to declare this day, November 5th 2011, Mustachio Day! This donation also kicks off my 2nd year of growing a stache’ for charity.

Last year, with the help of many generous donations from people like you, coupled with the steady follicle growth on my upper lip, I raised over $1000.00 for men’s health. The specific organizations that benefited from last year’s Movember campaign, (who are also a partner this year too), were the Movember Foundation, the Prostate Cancer Foundation, and LIVESTRONG.

What’s new with this year’s Movember push?

For starters I’m forming a team this year. We are THE MUSTACHIOS OF THE WORLD. Our mission is to raise awareness for men’s health during the month of November. In order to accomplish this, The Mustachios of the World are growing mustaches, raising money, and spreading the word about men’s health. It’s easy. Check this out: Did you know that 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime? It’s true. Boom! I just spread the word. It’s that easy.

We have a donation center set up like last year too. But this one has a cool name. We’re calling it Mustachio Central, a place where you can donate, track our progress and learn fun information about men’s health.

The Mustachios of the World welcome anyone who wants to join our cause, even Mustachioettes.

Together we will change the world. In the mean time, let’s save a few asses while we’re at it.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Dear Cubs Fans,

Dear Cubs Fans,

I know you’re excited your fanboy owner finally did something right by nabbing Theo Epstein from the Red Sox. Now listen up. Before you run off to the jeweler with your ring sizes, please note that today marks the 6 year anniversary of the Chicago White Sox ending their 88 year World Series drought. The Southsiders did this in wire-to-wire fashion, exhibiting some of the best post season pitching I have ever seen. Happy World Series Day!
